You know Hindi films. Meet Kannada cinema.

Ten films for the Hindi-film viewer crossing into Kannada cinema, in the order to watch them.

filmi.ai · 13 Sep 2026 · ten films, chosen by hand; each card’s score and age guidance are live from the Friday run

For most of its life Kannada cinema was the one the rest of India did not watch, and it liked it that way. For almost half a century Karnataka kept dubbed films out of its theatres altogether, so the industry in Bengaluru grew up talking to itself: a gentleman superstar, Dr. Rajkumar, who refused politics when every other southern star was running for office; a 1970s art cinema that won National Awards the way other industries won box office; and a mainstream that mostly stayed home. Then, in the space of four years, K.G.F and Kantara happened, and the industry that nobody dubbed became the one everybody did. If you have never watched an Indian film at all, start with the Hindi pack and come back here second.

What is different: Kannada cinema is the smallest of the five by reach and the most local by habit. Its best films are about a specific place, a coastal village where the spirit possesses a dancer, a dry-country town where an old man’s death sets three generations in motion, a Bengaluru engineering college that everyone in the state seems to have attended. Where Telugu cinema builds kingdoms and Tamil cinema picks fights, Kannada tends to notice: the new generation that arrived around 2014, the Rakshit Shetty and Raj B. Shetty crowd, makes films with the texture of a good short story, and the industry’s highest-rated film on this site is one made almost entirely with villagers playing themselves. K.G.F is not in the pack; you have seen it, and the critics we read did not rate it, which tells you something about the gap between what the industry sells and what it is good at.

These ten are in order. We open with the one that made the country look, then the new generation that made the last decade, then the film that won at Locarno, and then we walk back to the monsoon romance that reset the industry’s economics, the gentleman star, and the film that started Indian parallel cinema. By number five you will have the accent. By number ten you will be watching a 1970 film about a dead heretic and understanding why it mattered.
